Jet X20 is a watercraft racer that got shipwrecked by the storm of mediocrity.
Essentially Sled Storm in the water, X20 gives you a jet ski, a boost gauge, and some tricks to do, and pits you up against other watercraft in a race to the finish. It's all been done before in better ways, and that's the title's primary shortcoming. There is a higher emphasis on tricks in this game than in say, Wave Race, but not so much that it becomes Tony Hawk's Pro Kawasaki. To reiterate, it's not the game's fault that it's a clone of every other waterskiing game out there (and not really a half bad one at that,) but it is.
On the upside, the graphics and sound really do help to take your mind off the shallow gameplay, at least for a while. The environments, water effects, and models are all superb for a Playstation 2 title, and the soundtrack consists of hard-hitting techno, though it does all sound the same after a while.
Perhaps it's because I've never been a hardcore devotee of the genre, but I can't think of any other watercraft games that are an immediate threat to Jet X20. It's your only choice, it would seem: thank your stars it's not a horrible default.
