SEGA announces three new 'Sonic the Hedgehog' titles, as sales of latest Sonic series reach one million worldwide

Building upon the global success of the Sonic The Hedgehog series, Sega Corporation has announced the development of three new Sonic The Hedgehog titles:
"Sonic Mega Collection™" for Nintendo GameCube
"Sonic Adventure™ " for Nintendo GameCube
"Sonic Advance™ 2" for GameBoy Advance.

Sega will showcase both "Sonic Advance 2" and "Sonic Mega Collection" at the 'Next Generation World Hobby Fair' held on 13th and 14th July 2002 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan.

Meanwhile, Sega Corporation has also revealed that the latest 'Sonic the Hedgehog' games, "Sonic Adventure 2 Battle" for Nintendo GameCube and "Sonic Advance" for GameBoy Advance, which were released in December 2001, have sold over one million units across Japan, North America and Europe.

Naoya Tsurumi, COO of SEGA Europe commented - "The latest Sonic titles have been a resounding success across Europe.  Sonic Adventure 2 Battle launched as one of the top three most popular GameCube titles, while Sonic Advance remains the number one title for Game Boy Advance.  I am delighted to see that even eleven years after the first Sonic game, his popularity remains as solid as ever "

Both of the existing Sonic titles were the first to take advantage of the GameCube/ GameBoy Advance link-up feature, which makes it possible to transfer data from one console to another, offering consumers the opportunity to explore aspects of the game-play which would not have been previously possible.  As Naoya Tsurumi further explains: "Sega has always been committed to creating innovative content.  The link cable on the existing two games allows you to play aspects of Sonic Adventure 2 Battle through Sonic Advance, so game-play can continue away from the home.  This unique feature has undoubtedly contributed to the sales success of these two titles.."

The 'Sonic' series was launched on 23rd June 1991 with the classic 'Sonic the Hedgehog' on the Mega Drive.  Featuring superior graphics and renowned game-play, it became a huge hit, with more than 4 million games sold worldwide.  Since then, a further 10 Sonic titles have been released on various platforms and sales have escalated to well over 27 million worldwide.
