Come on, you've heard of "From Software," haven't you? The makers of Armored Core 3? Remember that game? Do you remember "Murakumo"? Yeah, I thought it sucked too.  So, here comes Otogi from Sega and From – is it another Murakumo or is it more like AC3? Am I going to tell you in the first paragraph? Please.

Otogi could best be classified as a "fast paced 3D action game with deep RPG elements," in fact, that's what it says right on the box.  It also says "the most intense, stylish combat available only on Xbox" and in the way of saying that "Maximum Pool is the best pool game on the Sega Dreamcast," they sure are correct in that statement!

The press sheet says: "Set in ancient Japan and steeped in real-life folkore and mysticism, this is the story of Raikoh, an undead warrior who must stop a ferocious demonic army that has been unleashed upon the Earth.  Blending frentic 3D action with deep RPG elements, you'll master 30+ weapons, 12 varieties of magic, and dozens of stylish combat moves.  Explore 25+ massive, highly-destructible environments in which even buildings can be destroyed.  Upgrade weapons, magic, character attributes, and manage an inventory of special items."

Let's make it very clear: your character, Raikoh, goes on a mission of destruction.  Pretty much everything in the game can be destroyed.  As a friend of mine said on ICQ, it's rather odd that someone can destroy a single house with a sword, but it sure is fun.

Graphics are very well done in the game and the sound is also very nice.  In game Dolby Digital is very well done and 480p is supported on HDTVs.  Sega didn't spend a lot on dubbing the game in English, and it's highly recommended you keep the Japanese acting in.  Even if you don't know what it says, it sounds better than the Engrish.

Although the game says there are 25 levels, it feels as though you have about 10 and they are just rehashed again.  Granted, you may or may not notice because all you are doing is hacking and slashing.  Although the box says there are RPG elements, you'd be hard pressed to find them, because basically what you are doing is killing or destroying-that's how you get 'experience.'

If you like destroying stuff with awesome graphics and sound, Otogi is your game, no doubt about it.  The only bummer about the game is that you can get through it pretty quick, even with some of the challenging bosses.  Definitely a game to show off to your friends (even if there's no multiplayer), Otogi is a lot of fun.
