When reviewing Red Faction 2's PC port, one nagging question comes to mind – where is the multiplayer support?
Sure, the single player game is still a blast – literally, thanks to the geo-mod technology. And using a mouse and keyboard, aiming at the minions of corrupt dictator Victor Sopot just became a lot less frustrating. However, at this point, Red Faction 2 has been ported to every system currently on the market, and while I am not naïve enough to expect additional weapons or levels, I am also jaded enough to expect that features will not be taken out of the game during the porting process.
Which brings me back to my original question: why is there no multiplayer?
The single player mode lasts a good 7-10 hours, and that's if you're not a FPS veteran. But while the single player is the same enjoyable experience for most of the way through – a few submarine levels be damned, – the hallmark of the Red Faction series' legacy has been in the fun that is to be had in blowing up your friends while destroying the environments. And though the game does include a bunch of game modes and settings, you can only play against bots! I thought consoles were supposed to be the cripples when it came to online gaming…
Nonetheless, if you are looking for an excellent, if a tad linear, first person shooter, you can't go wrong with Red Faction 2. Depending on your system configuration, it is certainly the most impressive version of the game, both in aesthetics and controls. Just make sure you don't give a hoot about playing against other living, breathing people.
