Let's see…do I buy a used Dreamcast on eBay + Sonic Adventure or this port? They are both approximately the same price you know.
Sonic Adventure DX Directors Cut is a port – PORT --- of a game from last century. Apparently GameCube owners are so desperate for games that they need to purchase half-decade old games with a few new features in order to enjoy their console. Let me tell you, you shouldn't bother.
Although GameRankings didn't review this game on launch, the site I was working for at the time, GamePen, did. We gave it a 3.5/5. After playing the game again on the GameCube, I believe this rating was justified, especially 4 years down the road.
I went back and played the original Dreamcast game. Either the GameCube hardware sucks or the emulation/port software used sucks because the frame rate seems much better and fluid on the Dreamcast vs. the GameCube.
Graphics still look very good and all of the control and camera issues that were there in 1999 are still there now. The game is fast, frolic-tastic and fun, but those issues should have been fixed in all those years. The result is a major downer.
Yes, there are some additional things in this game such as Game Boy Advance Connectivity (which to some extent replaces the VMU in the original game). Progressive scan support is nice, but that still won't help the poor camera angles in the game.
In the new version of the game, there are some additional mini games and a mission-based mode which increases the replay value but by no means is worth re-purchasing a game from 1999, especially if you've already played the Dreamcast version. The Game Gear inclusion is neat, but you can pretty much find that elsewhere as well.
Newbies to Sonic may want to pick this up as a rental, especially if they enjoyed the other Sega re-releases on GameCube a few months back. That's really the only people I can recommend this game to – it sure does show it's age from 1999.
