In a day and age where licensed games are getting progressively better at appealing to a wider audience, one can't help but feel a bit nostalgic when titles like Yu-Gi-Oh! Reshef of Destruction come along – games that will have absolutely no crossover appeal to anyone outside their intended audiences.
Never mind the fact that it takes a good 15 minutes to get around to playing the actual game. Never mind the fact that most of the gameplay revolves a rule set that exists for the sole purpose of requiring players to memorize it. Even if you look past these shortcomings, Reshef looks pretty bad, even by the standards of the rapidly expanding it's-Pokemon-but-with-something-else genre that Yu-Gi-Oh! helped create.
The storyline – if you can call it that – and rules will make no sense to anyone who doesn't have the cards, action figures, bedding, and towel products from the show. Presentation-wise, Reshef is like every other RPG on the GBA – superdeformed sprites on a mostly static background. Combat involves cards. Admittedly, they're well designed and colorful cards, but they are still cards, and I doubt many players feel like saving the world when they pick up a pack of Hoyles.
Not that I have anything against card games. The Lost Kingdoms series proved that this sort of thing can be done in a way that appeals to anyone who wants a good game. Reshef of Destruction does nothing to give itself that distinction.
