Like the console version, TMNT 2: Battle Nexus for the GBA turns a beloved franchise into a mediocre action/platform game.

Instead of focusing on making the best brawler possible, Konami has gone down the path of dreaded variety – you will collect crystals, play in shooter/air combat levels, and do other things not related to fighting foot soldiers and Shredder.

Sadly, even the brawling action gets tedious.  In some levels, you don't even begin with a weapon.  Physical attacks take off your life bar.  Later, each turtle must use his individual special ability to advance, but the crystal collecting, special abilities, and shooter stages don't remedy the biggest problem with the game – the brawling and platforming just do not provide for a compelling experience.

The style and presentation values are pretty impressive, with vibrant, cartoon-like graphics and digitized voice clips from the show being spread throughout the game.  But shiny coat of paint not withstanding, we have yet to see a return to the pure greatness that was the original Turtle brawlers.
