Marvel Nemesis combines an awesome roster of classic heroes and villains with some less-than-inspired original EA creations, throws them into Smash-Brothers style combat, and comes out on top due to the strength of its multiplayer functions.
To get it out of the way, the single-player mode exists solely to unlock new characters for the multiplayer game, which is the heart and soul of what makes this title so much fun. Again, this isn't a repeat of X-Men: Next Generation; this is a game styled after the fast-paced, button-mashing action of Nintendo's Smash Brothers Melee. Matches can (and often do) degenerate into a battle of tossing objects at one another, but if it's fun (and it is!), then so what?
Despite its simplicity, the action really looks superb on-screen and captures the look and feel of the comic universe with fluid movement and awesome battle animations. Even in the otherwise lacking story mode, the voice work is often witty and humorous. Some characters are very much unbalanced when compared to others (Spider-Man is an absolutely unbeatable beast!), but such is the way of these party games. A solid online mode provides easy, fast-paced combat, even when friends are in short supply. It's not a classic for the ages, but Marvel Nemesis is a fun little title to pick up and play for thirty minutes at a time or so.
